THE SONS OF THE UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR
The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a patriotic
and educational organization similar to the Grand Army of the Republic
(GAR), which was the largest fraternal order formed by Civil War
veterans who served the Union. Founded in 1881, the SUVCW is officially
recognized as the GAR’s legal successor, receiving its Congressional
Charter in 1954.
The purpose of the SUVCW is:
1) |
To perpetuate the memory of the GAR and of the men
who served to save the Union during the American Civil War – in the
years 1861-1865; |
2) |
To assist in the preservation and making available for research
the documents and records pertaining to the GAR and its members; |
3) |
To cooperate in doing honor to all those who have patriotically
served our Country in any war; |
4) |
To teach patriotism and the duties of citizenship, the history
of our Country, and the love and honor of our flag; |
5) |
To oppose every tendency or movement that would weaken loyalty
to, or make for the destruction or impairment of our Constitutional
Union; |
6) |
To inculcate and broadly sustain the American principles of representative
government, of equal rights, and of impartial justice for all. |
The SUVCW participates with other patriotic organizations in the proper
observance of our national holidays - especially Memorial Day (May
30th); seeks out and marks the graves of Civil War veterans; observes
the care and upkeep of Civil War memorials and brings any failure to
do so to the attention of the proper authorities.
Eligibility in the SUVCW is open to male descendants of soldiers,
sailors, or marines who were regularly mustered into Federal Service
and served honorably in, were honorably discharged from, or died in
the service of the Army or Navy of the United States during the Civil
War, 1861-1865.
